Their pieces are on top of you and you panic. Often a single quiet move defends, blocks, or counterattacks and saves the position. You miss it.

• vs game: a single bishop retreat would have defended the back rank and held. Played a different move and lost.
• vs puzzle: a counter-pin defends the threatened piece. Recognised too late.
