When both rooks reach the 7th rank (the 2nd for Black), they defend each other and crush the king pinned to its back rank. The classic finish: one rook checks on the king's file, the other defends the checker so the king cannot capture. Doubled rooks on the 7th win games; doubled rooks on the 7th with a stranded king mate them.
