Place a protected piece where pawns cannot chase it.
An outpost is a useful square that enemy pawns cannot easily attack. A protected knight there may attack targets or restrict the opponent’s pieces. Other pieces can still exchange it, and a pawn break can change the square’s safety.
Develop your bishop onto an open diagonal
Your bishop leaves its starting square and gains room along an open diagonal. Getting it into play helps your pieces work together and clears part of the route for castling.
