Prepare your pieces before opening the king’s pawn cover.

First aim your pieces at the castled king. Then look for a pawn exchange or sacrifice that opens a useful line. A pawn advance works best when your pieces can use the opening and your own king stays safe.

• Bring enough pieces into the attack before sacrificing.
• Name the file or diagonal the exchange will open.
• At a pawn chain, calculate captures, advances and the opponent’s central counterplay.
