The Open f-File Attack: chess middlegame concept

Use an open f-file to bring pieces toward the king.

An open f-file can give rooks and queen a route toward the enemy king. Identify a target along the file and prepare enough support to attack it. An open file alone does not justify a sacrifice.

• Check which squares the defenders control.
• Double rooks when both can contribute to the attack.
• Calculate the king’s escapes and counterplay before sacrificing.
