Holding the opposition while the kings are still far apart

Close opposition stretched out: same file/rank/diagonal, odd squares between, side not moving holds it.

• Same file, rank, or diagonal with odd squares between: distant opposition.
• Side not to move holds it, same as the close opposition.
• Matters most in long king-and-pawn races.
• Count squares every move: file, rank, or diagonal all count.
