Use the colors to choose attack or defense.
Bishops on opposite colors cannot exchange each other. In a simplified ending, the defender may block the attacking pawns on squares its bishop controls. With queens or rooks present, an attack on one color can become stronger because the other bishop cannot help defend those squares.
Prepare a kingside pawn break
Your pawn controls g5 and prepares to advance again against Black’s g-pawn. A pawn trade there can give your king a new target, while the bishop helps deal with Black’s distant passed pawn.
