The Open f-File Attack: a middlegame course

Prepare attackers on the f-file and calculate the captures. The file may need to be opened before the attack works.

5 lessons, each followed by its own puzzle drill, then 10 themed puzzle packs.

• Target the King’s Weak Pawn — Count the defenders of the intended target near the king.
• Count Attackers and Defenders — Calculate the full sequence, rather than only counting attackers.
• Open the f-File — Sacrifice only when the following pieces can use the opened line.
• When the Breakthrough Fails — Look for a capture or defensive move that stops the attack.
• Finish the Kingside Attack — Use checks and supported threats against the exposed king.
