The Vancura Draw: an endgame course

In a Vancura setup, use side checks while keeping pressure on the rook pawn. Maintain the necessary checking distance.

5 lessons, each followed by its own puzzle drill, then 10 themed puzzle packs.

• The Problem — Identify where the defending king and rook must stand.
• Attack from the Side — Keep the rook attacking the pawn from the side.
• Flank Checks — Give side checks when the king approaches the pawn.
• Restrict the Attacking King — Keep the pawn under attack when its rook stops protecting it.
• The Fortress Draw — Maintain the drawing setup rather than chasing unnecessary captures.
