The Rule of the Square: an endgame course

The rule of the square estimates whether a king can catch a passed pawn. Account for the side to move and double pawn advance.

• Count the Promotion Route — Compare the king’s distance with the pawn’s promotion route.
• Draw the Box — Mark the pawn’s promotion square and the king’s catching area.
• Side to Move First — Account for whose turn it is before counting.
• The Two Square Start — Include a starting pawn’s possible two-square advance.
• Chase or Push — Compare advancing your pawn with catching the opposing pawn.
