Dynamic strength or fixed weakness: depends entirely on who's moving next.
Step 1 of 3
Hanging Pawns
Concept
Hanging Pawns
Two side-by-side pawns with no neighbors: dynamic when pushing, weak when stuck. Owner plays for activity; defender trades pieces and targets them in the endgame.
Remember
• Two pawns side by side on the fourth or fifth rank, no neighbors: hanging pawns.
• Owner: dynamic play, push one pawn to open lines.
• Defender: trade pieces, reach an endgame where the pawns are weak.
• The central pawn push (Benko or Grunfeld style) is the signature dynamic motif.
