Tarrasch's rule, applied with menacing regularity.
Step 1 of 3
Rook behind the passed pawn
Concept
Rook behind the passed pawn
Tarrasch's rule: rooks belong behind passed pawns, yours and theirs. Behind yours, the rook gets more squares as the pawn advances. Behind theirs, it attacks and restricts.
Remember
• Tarrasch's rule: rooks behind passed pawns, yours and theirs.
• Behind your pawn: rook supports the advance, open file.
• Behind their pawn: rook attacks it and restricts their king.
• A rook in front of a pawn is cramped and loses tempo.
